Saint Benedict Catholic Church, Carrolltown

The Saint Benedict Catholic Church was completed in December 25, 1850, and named in honor of Saint Benedict. The Parish was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus December 8, 1872.

The Benedictine monastery was built in 1865 (closed 1962). In 1872 the church tower and cross were erected. The tower stands 172 feet tall, with the cross another 9 feet. It has four bells, each a different size and pitch, cast and installed during the construction of the tower. A four-faced clock was added to the tower in 1899.

Stained-glass windows were installed in the church in 1925 by the Art Glass Firm of Bavaria, Germany. They depict these religious scenes:

  • Christ manifests Himself at Emmaus
  • Saint Benedict receives Maurus and Placidus as pupils
  • The temptation of Saint Benedict
  • Saint Benedict gives the Rule to the Monks
  • Saint Benedict raises a child to life
  • Saint IIdephonse of Toledo and Saint Peter of Cluny
  • Saint Willibard and Saint Willibrord
  • Saint Maurus and Saint Placidus
  • Saint Bennet and Saint Dunstan
  • Saint Scholastica and Saint Gertrude
  • Saint Gregory and Saint Boniface
  • The death of Saint Benedict
  • Saint Benedict blessing the poisoned cup
  • Saint Benedict sees the soul of his sister in Heaven
  • Meeting of Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica
  • The Crucifixion

There are statues in the back of the church that were imported from Bavaria, depicting Saint Benedict with Maurus and Placidus, Saint Scholastica, Saint Gertrude, Saint Anselm, and Saint IIdephonse.

The alter panels depict sacrificial scenes, Melchizedeck offering a sacrifice of bread and wine; Jesus, Lamb of God; and Abraham offering the sacrifice of his son Isaac.

Also of historic interest are the cemetery, laid out in 1854, and the schoolhouse, built in 1878, and still in use.

The rectory is modern, having been added in 1972.
